I really don't understand homophobia. I have never once in my life had any reason to dislike anyone for their sexual orientation. Is there some correlation between being homophobic and being a closet homosexual?
the gist of it is this - normally the harder people deny something or hate against something, the more likely they are doing so because they are insecure about it themselves. a good analogy is the schoolyard bully (picking on other people because to make himself feel bigger, but also the fear that he will be bullied if he didn't). so, some (not all) homophobes are so hateful against the sexual orientation of others to can cover their own insecurities that maybe, they are gay too, or of being accused as gay.
just sayin that it's one of the many explanations. it could be that they are scared of turning into a homo, or scared people will find out they are a homo... OR they are probably just really unpleasant, bigoted, people in general. :P
OP here. It makes me pretty sad that we have so many homophobic people on campus. I posted this wondering if I could connect with a guy that may have been actually interested in me. That doesn't happen often on our campus, especially with the gay population we have. I hope, one day, our society can truly change to be more accepting. To the people who stood up against homophobia, you rock! :)

yeah sure, and if I am xenophobic - this must mean i am a closet jew??
I thought PSYCH101 said the closet homosexual theory didn't hold up

I'm saying it shouldn't be considered an explanation because it doesn't hold up.

the study's relatively contemporary, and it proves that it is one possible explanation.
however you haven't given any plausible reasons as to why it doesn't "hold up".
and we really ought to get off of this poor guy's mc... lol
I was thinking "awww" till I read the last part.
HOMOPHOBIC PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK! YOU ARE STUPID!
